Best Dutch Interpreters Manchester
Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough in Greater Manchester, England. The city is notable for its architecture, culture, musical exports, media links, scientific and engineering output, social impact, sports clubs and transport connections. The city has also excelled in scientific and engineering advancement, as it was at the University of Manchester, in 1917, that scientist Ernest Rutherford first split the atom. The university's further achievements include Frederic C. Williams, Tom Kilburn and Geoff Tootill who developed and built the world's first stored-program computer in 1948; and, in 2004, Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov successfully isolated and characterised the first graphene.
In terms of ethnic composition, the City of Manchester has the highest non-white proportion of any district in Greater Manchester. Statistics from the 2011 census showed that 66.7 per cent of the population was White (59.3 per cent White British, 2.4 per cent White Irish, 0.1 per cent Gypsy or Irish Traveller, 4.9 per cent Other White – although the size of mixed European and British ethnic groups is unclear, there are reportedly over 25,000 people in Greater Manchester of at least partial Italian descent alone, which represents 5.5 per cent of the population of Greater Manchester). 4.7 per cent were mixed race (1.8 per cent White and Black Caribbean, 0.9 per cent White and Black African, 1.0 per cent White and Asian, 1.0 per cent other mixed), 17.1 per cent Asian (2.3 per cent Indian, 8.5 per cent Pakistani, 1.3 per cent Bangladeshi, 2.7 per cent Chinese, 2.3 per cent other Asian), 8.6 per cent Black (5.1 per cent African, 1.6 per cent other Black), 1.9 per cent Arab and 1.2 per cent of other ethnic heritage.
Three common types of interpretation
Simultaneous Interpretation: In Simultaneous Interpreting the interpreter listens to a message in one language and immediately after understanding the general meaning of a sentence, translates and renders the message verbally into the target language, while at the same time continuing to listen to the incoming message. Simultaneous interpreting requires a sound proof booth which meets ISO standards of acoustic isolation, dimensions, air quality and accessibility as well as appropriate equipment like headphones and microphones.
Consecutive Interpretation: In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter typically waits every one to five minutes until the speaker has finished a part of his speech. This allows the interpreter to analyze the untranslated version of speech and gives him appropriate time to render a high quality translation into another language. Consecutive interpreting facilitates true and accurate interpretation of one language to another, so that both the speaker and listener can understand each other slowly and deliberately.
Whispered Interpreting: In whisper interpreting the interpreter translates into a target language which is understood by the majority of participants. The whisper interpreter translates the source speech in ears of the listener. Using low voice the interpreter whispers whatever the speaker is saying. Whisper interpreting facilitates two way translation as the listener can also ask the interpreter to translate and communicate with other participants. The whispered interpreter is required to be a native speaker of the main target language. Whispered interpreting is also known as chuchotage.
Dutch Language and Translations
Dutch is the official language in Aruba, Belgium, Curaçao, Netherlands, Sint Maarten and Suriname. It is also the official language of the Benelux Union, the European Union, the South American Union and the Caribbean Community. It is an Indo-European language which belongs to the West Germanic family of languages. There are approximately 28 million native speakers of the Dutch language.
Common equipment used during interpretation
Interpretation booths: Interpretation booths provide sound isolation for the interpreters. There are two main purposes of such isolation. Firstly it provides the interpreter a quiet environment to work in. As interpreter listens to the speaker, he has to focus on the words of the speaker. The removal of outside distractions thus provides a better working environment for the interpreter. Secondly as the speaker speaks inside the booth, other people attending the meeting, who dont require the translation, do not get disturbed when the interpreter translates and speaks through the microphone.
Interpreter Console: As interpreting is a strenuous and complex activity, often two or more interpreters translate consequently taking chances one after the other. The interpreter console is most commonly used by interpreters translating in the same target language. The console helps them to receive, transmit and control the incoming and outgoing audio. The interpreter console helps increase the efficiency of the interpreters.
Transmitter: Transmitter can be used as stand alone transmitting equipment or attached to the interpreter console. It is used to transmit the audio.
Receiver: Receivers can be built-in speakers, headphones or earphones which are used to hear the audio. They are used to listen to the audio distribution that is being transmitted. Most receivers have the option to select the channel and adjust the volume of the audio.
While selecting the interpretation equipment following factors should be taken into consideration:
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Size of the room and number of attendees.
- Location of the meeting, whether the meeting is held inside or outside.
- Will the interpreting equipment be installed permanently or will it be removed after a specific meeting and transferred to another location.
- Are there any security norms with respect to the conversations that require translation.
- The number of target languages for which the translation is required.
