Three common types of interpretation
Simultaneous Interpretation: In Simultaneous Interpreting the interpreter listens to a message in one language and immediately after understanding the general meaning of a sentence, translates and renders the message verbally into the target language, while at the same time continuing to listen to the incoming message. Simultaneous interpreting requires a sound proof booth which meets ISO standards of acoustic isolation, dimensions, air quality and accessibility as well as appropriate equipment like headphones and microphones.
Consecutive Interpretation: In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter typically waits every one to five minutes until the speaker has finished a part of his speech. This allows the interpreter to analyze the untranslated version of speech and gives him appropriate time to render a high quality translation into another language. Consecutive interpreting facilitates true and accurate interpretation of one language to another, so that both the speaker and listener can understand each other slowly and deliberately.
Whispered Interpreting: In whisper interpreting the interpreter translates into a target language which is understood by the majority of participants. The whisper interpreter translates the source speech in ears of the listener. Using low voice the interpreter whispers whatever the speaker is saying. Whisper interpreting facilitates two way translation as the listener can also ask the interpreter to translate and communicate with other participants. The whispered interpreter is required to be a native speaker of the main target language. Whispered interpreting is also known as chuchotage.
Welsh Language and Translations
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, an English writer, poet, philologist and university professor considered Welsh as the senior language of the men of Britain. This is true because of all the languages now spoken in Britain, Welsh has by far the oldest roots. Welsh evolved from the Celtic branch of Indo-European languages. The Indo-European was spoken at least 6000 years ago by semi-nomadic people, who most probably lived in the steppe regions of Southern Russia or maybe Anatolia. Brittonic and Goidelic are two branches of Celtic languages. From Brittonic evolved Cumbric in southern Scotland and north-west England, Welsh in Wales, Cornish in south-west Britain and Breton in Brittany.
According to the Census of 2011, 562,000 people in Wales could speak Welsh, a decrease from 582,400 according to the 2001 census. It is estimated that on average 5,000 Welsh speakers from Wales anually move to England, which is home to at least 200,000 people who have some grasp of the language. Experts believe that Welsh is in top 15% of prospective languages, largely owing to the fact that it is the closest neighbour of English.
Welsh when compared with many langauges is not regarded as difficult to master. Unlike English it is largely phonetic and the words are pronounced just as they are written. This reduces lot of confusion which in English, is a very common feature. In English as in many other languages there are letters in words which are written but not pronounced. However every letter written in Welsh is pronounced. The Welsh alphabet consists of 20 simple letters and 8 digraphs.
The 28 Welsh alphabets are a, b, c, ch, d, dd, e, f, ff, g, ng, h, i, l, ll, m, n, o, p, ph, r, rh, s, t, th, u, w and y. The English alphabets j, k, q, v, x and z are not part of the Welsh alphabets. Welsh vocabulary is largely of Celtic origin but it still has words belonging to other langauges, specifically Latin, French and English. However from vocabulary perspective Welsh has good ability to coin new words from existing resources. Welsh uses the system of initial consonant mutations. For example soft mutations are used when the feminine noun is preceded by the definite or when an adjective follows a feminine noun. Nasal and aspirate mutations occur most frequently after fy (my) and ei (her) respectively. Gender of nouns in Welsh are either masculine or feminine. There is no it and there are no indefinite articles. The plurals can be formed in different ways.
The Welsh numeral system is rather complicated. For example the basic counting unit is twenty or ugain. Thus forty is deugain (two twenties) and sixty is trigain (three twenties). Hundred is cant, fourteen is pedwar ar ddeg (four on ten), sixteen is un ar bymtheg (one on fifteen) and eighteen is deunaw (two nines). Prepositions in Welsh are conjugated. The general order of sentences in Welsh is verb, subject, object and indirect object. Most often the adjective is placed after the noun.
Common equipment used during interpretation
Interpretation booths: Interpretation booths provide sound isolation for the interpreters. There are two main purposes of such isolation. Firstly it provides the interpreter a quiet environment to work in. As interpreter listens to the speaker, he has to focus on the words of the speaker. The removal of outside distractions thus provides a better working environment for the interpreter. Secondly as the speaker speaks inside the booth, other people attending the meeting, who dont require the translation, do not get disturbed when the interpreter translates and speaks through the microphone.
Interpreter Console: As interpreting is a strenuous and complex activity, often two or more interpreters translate consequently taking chances one after the other. The interpreter console is most commonly used by interpreters translating in the same target language. The console helps them to receive, transmit and control the incoming and outgoing audio. The interpreter console helps increase the efficiency of the interpreters.
Transmitter: Transmitter can be used as stand alone transmitting equipment or attached to the interpreter console. It is used to transmit the audio.
Receiver: Receivers can be built-in speakers, headphones or earphones which are used to hear the audio. They are used to listen to the audio distribution that is being transmitted. Most receivers have the option to select the channel and adjust the volume of the audio.
While selecting the interpretation equipment following factors should be taken into consideration:
Size of the room and number of attendees.
Location of the meeting, whether the meeting is held inside or outside.
Will the interpreting equipment be installed permanently or will it be removed after a specific meeting and transferred to another location.
Are there any security norms with respect to the conversations that require translation.
The number of target languages for which the translation is required.
